One part that really struck me was the pure and outrageous honesty of Sarah when she is told that she will bear a son. She laughs. She doesn't nod and smile, silently wondering about the sanity of the Almighty, her reaction is undeniably truthful. 13 Then the LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?' 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD ? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son."

15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, "I did not laugh." (Good defense Sarah)

But he said, "Yes, you did laugh."

"Is anything too hard for the LORD?"

I would like to firmly answer 'No' and yet often I find myself agreeing that nothing is too hard for the Lord and yet not really believing it. I am reminded of the father in Mark 9 who seems to have the same half-hearted reaction to the claims of God.

"21Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?"

"From childhood," he answered. 22"It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us."

23" 'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."

24Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!""

I believe like Sarah, reacting with an irreverent laugh. I believe like the father, half-heartedly and with a faith that says "if you can Lord".

The Pursuit of Wisdom

I have been thinking quite consistently over the past few years...about how my academic pursuits, especially in the area that I am studying, applies and influences how I in turn influence the world around me. I am a seeker of knowledge, of learning more about a whole host of topics and I strongly attempt to remain aware of the going-ons of the world. A goal of Bethany is discovering the link between the head knowledge that is focussed upon on the academic side of the school, and the heart knowledge, becoming more like Christ.

N.T. Wright provides an interesting analysis of this link in a speech written for the 175th anniversary of the University of Durham. His focus is on the importance of Jerusalem as a place of wisdom and a representation of how the world can be transformed. I found his comments on wisdom to be particularly interesting.

Defining wisdom, Wright says, "It was on the one hand the amassing, and the delighting in, an accumulation of knowledge about the natural and human worlds – trees, plants, animals, birds, music, literature, architecture, medicine. And it was on the other hand the delight in the meaning which all these things have, in themselves and in their labyrinthine complexity and interrelation, and hence the making of wise judgments about what ought to be done, not just what ought to be known. Wisdom, in the biblical tradition, includes in its wide embrace both the encyclopaedic collection and arrangement of the data, the evidence, the facts, and that strange, soft something which sneaks round the back and asks the question, But what’s it all for? What does it mean? And what should we do with it?"

The danger of education is that it will be used strictly to fill up the space between the ears, the danger is even larger in Christian education because the point of higher Christian education should not be merely to fill the space but to in some way cause the learner to impact the world and participate in the second aspect of Jerusalem's importance, the work of God in transforming this broken world.

"the Jesus we find in the New Testament is the Jesus who now relates equally to each place and each moment, and who relates as the one who re-embodies those old Jerusalem traditions, those old Solomonic traditions, so that St Paul can say that in him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. And the way Jesus does that is not by his having visited this or that country as a boy, but by pouring out his transforming wisdom on people, on communities and individuals, so that they can become in turn agents of that transformation in the world around. Christ plays in ten thousand places, lovely in limbs and lovely in eyes not his. The new Jerusalem, the ultimate new creation, remains God’s gift; but it is already anticipated in Jesus himself, the one in whom heaven and earth have already become one, and it can therefore be further anticipated as people seek wisdom, not for themselves alone – that’s always the temptation for any scholar, any community of scholars – but for the benefit of the whole world."

Light in the Darkness

A 5 year contract for a big-name defenceman, where have we heard this before. It was about this group during the Ice Age who had to go out on the ocean and search for seals and such....yadda yadda yadda....what struck me was when one of the 'informed experts' talked about how they try and piece together what they know of the ice age and put it all together. When I working in landscaping two years ago I promptly realized that the 14 day forecast shows a sleek graph but is otherwise completely and utterly useless. The 7 day forecast has joined this category and now with my experiences over the last week of checking the weather for this long weekend, I have decided to abandon any sort of hope in the ability to forecast the weather.

***Begin Rant Transmission***

Early last week this weekend was forecasted to be rainy all weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)

Around mid-week the percentages went up and suddenly Monday was added to the mix of rain.

By the end of the week with the weekend fast approaching the forecast changed to Saturday and Sunday being rainy but Friday only have a slight chance and Monday in the same boat.

Friday it drizzled and was cold but we worked. Yesterday we didn't work and it was cold but did not rain. Anyway things have been going well thus far on tour, we did 8 deputations in the 6 days before today so that was quite the stretch especially when travelling from Hepburn to Airdrie to Calgary to Penticton to Chiliwack and now to Abbotsford. It has been a stretch but it's been a lot of of fun to perform so many times in such a short period of time. We've had a couple of beautiful days here in B.C., the rain is supposed to return for the next few so that's back to normal. We finish up on the Island on the weekend before the wonderful drive back all the way to Hepburn (prayer please?)

I do ask for prayer for energy and unity and patience and all those wonderful things that are necessary for a team to stay strong even when being together in close quarters for an extended period of time. Also that the message of our scripts would continue to be heard by the people, we have a few youth events in the next few days so that would be really cool if we could connect strongly with them.

Thanks all! The close of the year is a difficult time, a time of goodbyes and I think for many, also a time of some regrets: regrets that there wasn't enough time to spend with certain people, regrets that homework often was placed before relationships, why honesty is so difficult to give in the moment. Yet what happened this year, what seems to happen every year at Bethany is a great thing because of the GREAT thing that Christ accomplished.

"It was a great thing,
It was a great thing,
It was a great thing,
It was a great thing,
It was a great thing
That He did for me."

Why Dorian Funk Will be Excommunicated.

1. I am over the fact that $100 000 was all that separated the two sides, that following his departure the Oilers have dropped 9 straight, add the one prior to his flight and you have yourselves one loss short of the longest losing streak in Oilers history. We did get a point tonight! But really folks having only 5 true defensemen hurts as does having a flu bug ravage the team. 11 regulars were out of the lineup tonight for the Oilers. 11! Those who blame the coaching staff should really shut it, let's be honest there isn't any coaching staff that could do anything with a team so emotionally and physically destroyed.

This spring shall greatly pale in comparison to the intense Cup run of a year ago and so I search for the Cinderella that I can cheer for this year. But this of course isn't the real topic at hand.

The real focus is that of the Edmonton Oilers, 5-time Stanley Cup Champions, 2006 Western Conference Champions, 8 pts out of a playoff spot. Is a run possible? Yes. The thing with the Oilers is that they are a team that makes it happen when it seems most unrealistic. Yet it just doesn't seem that this team has what it takes. It is the time of year that Kevin Lowe must ask: Deal or No Deal? Cut to Commercial Break to Raise Suspense.

Although I hate the idea of giving up with a quarter of the season remaining and the thought of Ryan Smyth in any jersey but the Oilers is horrifying I think it's time to deal. The Oilers could very well win the next 4 games before the deadline and give themselves a chance but not likely. Sykora Gone, Nedved Gone, Smyth (rent him out). Get some solid talent and work with depth next year. There can be a whole new face to the Oilers (cue Schremp, Pouliot, Jacques) .

I have the answer Howie and I'm pushing that blinking red button.

Ephesians

This past weekend I had the privilege of working ahead on my Biblical Theology assignment which was to look at a book of the Bible and speak to the themes that it presents. It seemed like an easy enough assignment, look at those helpful headings that Zondervan puts in and all will be good. Needless to say it was not difficult to pick out themes from my book of choice, Ephesians. The hardest part of the assignment is describing the riches of a book, even one that is only 6 chapter long, in a mere 7 pages. I found that this was one of the most meaningful assignments I've done in the past 2.5+ years because it was solely focussed on the Bible. Commentaries were involved and the advice of well established scholars was consulted and yet the majority of the time was spent in the Word. What a privilege to spend my weekend (in between the indoor soccer matches of course) invested in the study of a book of the Bible. So what did I find?

The four key themes that I picked out of Ephesians were:
1. Salvation by Grace through Faith (Paul develops the theme of grace in relation to his opportunity to the work of Christ as well)

2. Prayer

3. Unity in the Body

4. Election and Responsibilities

I think that the fourth theme was particularly interesting because of the assumption of our election as sons and daughters of Christ. There is also a danger to look at the verses of election, claim for our own and then go on with life as if there are no responsibilities. Yet Paul clearly outlines several lists of responsibilities that are an expectation of the elect.

Read it for yourself.

Now That's Ironic

I read the story and then said, 'Wait a second we flew out of there that day'.

http://edition.cnn.com/2007/TRAVEL/01/27/thailand.airport.ap/index.html

32

Is the number of hours I was awake for yesterday and I say yesterday with a singular form because it was all on the 25th of January. BUT this meant that I slept when we finally arrived in Hepburn, which is a really big positive. Now it just a matter of forcing myself awake all day today so that I don't get all screwed up with the time change.

So how was Thailand?

It was a lot of things. It was challenging, but in ways different than Guatemala was. It was relaxing in many respects and a nice alternative to the chaos of Bethany. It was motivational, we have such a great hope in Christ that we must share, because the world is a hopeless place and people are genuinely looking for a hope. It was frustrating, going anywhere with a group of 17 is, let alone being a foreign country. It was a perspective changer, I can freely worship here, I have food everyday, I have a comfortable bed, have, have, have.

So all in all it was a great experience. I definitely enjoyed the north more than the south in terms of weather and air quality, but meeting Team 2000 and hearing their vision while in the south was quite incredible. There will likely be more to come on such things as a missions trip but for now I must digest...the cheese bread for lunch....oh and milk.....from a cow....not a soy.

Pua and a Premier

We are coming to the end of our stay in Pua and although I have not been particularly excited about teaching english here, the time has been really quite wonderful. This morning, it is 9am right now, is the last of the english teaching. Tonight we will go to Kathy's home for the final time and tomorrow we will be putting on a carnival for those kids. It should be a really good finale to a great time in this city with kids who have blessed everyone's heart with their worship and passion for Christ.

Last night half of the team took the opportunity to spend a night in an english student's home and there were many expectations and worries about what the night would hold. Would the food be strange? Would we be able to communicate? and the most feared of them all, What about the squatty potty. Anyway, Riediger and I were sent off for an evening of uncertainty and how did it go you all ask with held breath? OHHHH BOY!

I shall say straight off that I was expecting this to be a good change from the bubble of the resort that we are staying at. I was hoping that we could spend a night at a home of an average Thai family and get a taste of what life was normally like for people here. Then we stayed at the premier's house. Yes. We stayed at the Premier of the Province of Nan's house. It was large, very large. It was beautiful, very beautiful. It was posh, very posh. And we had lots of food, all good food, SPAGHETTI.

Anyway now that I am done bragging about the logistics I must say that it was great to spend time with some students. We learned a lot of Thai and could carry on conversations quite well. We spent time with a Thai family, a rich Thai family, but a Thai family all the same. It was fun to make supper with them, to sit on the balcony and joke and laugh about the lack of ability to pronounce english on their part and Thai on ours. All in all it was one of the best experiences I have had here; it wasn't difficult or challenging, but it was different and different is often good.

I shall see most of you soon!

Update #1

Torn from the depths of my creative mind comes the intriguing title 'Update #1'. What could it mean? Is it some sort of metaphor? Is it actually a link to a software upgrade? No folks it is simply an articulation of the first week in thailand.

It has been, well... good. We have been doing less than I had expected, perhaps I was expecting too much or wasn't listening in orientation classes, either way we did not really do anything of ministry-esque style until this past thursday when we began teaching english. Now I am not a huge fan of teaching english, 1. it doesn't really intrigue me to teach english, 2. I have learned that when language goes from a peoples group the culture is likely to follow. Thus I have somewhat of a wariness of teaching english as part of a Christian missions trip. Are we helping the children gain a leg up in the rat race? Yes we are. Are we providing an in for the missionaries who live here? Yes we are. This is where justification comes in for me, the missionaries will be here for years after we leave, thus this is their ship and their work that we are joining and frankly I will do what they say on most points. What i wonder is whether I am personally contributing to the spread of Western culture and the demise of traditional cultures which have so much to offer other people of the world and indeed the spread of the Gospel.

Now that the rant is done I can continue the update. The best part of each day for me is attending a worship service at Kathy's home which is a home for children who can't afford public schools themselves but would like to attend. There are thousands and thousands of children who would fit the bill, but Kathy's home is doing a small, yet hugely important part in this work. For one hour we join the children for a worship time and Bible study, yes Bible school peeps, they join together 1 hour every night to worship and study the Bible, shocking idea isn't it? Every night that we go I marvel at the worship being lifted up to God in two different languages and for me this is a small glimpse of what heaven will be like and the end of all times when every tongue will worship the Lord and every knee will bow.

The team is doing well, a few have had a day or two of sickness but nothing of huge note or worry. This week is more english teaching, this time to high schoolers (we were in the elementary last week, grade ones are......energetic) and Kathy's home every evening. Hopefully I can provide another update at some point towards the end of the week for all of those diehard subscribers.

Thailand

Despite new years eve bombings in Bangkok, we still get to go which is pretty sweet. To be fair this was a move by Harper to follow through on a key campaign process, a follow through which he knew would fail but which he had to attempt nonetheless. So how should a Christian respond now that the debate over the definition of marriage is finished, at least for a long time?

It is difficult not to suggest attempting to work through government in order to promote Christian ideals, and yet is this what we are called to do? I'm not sure that it is. So what does the Christian do in a situation such as this: desiring to hold strong to the beliefs set out in the Bible on one hand, while desiring to be a witness of God's love to all on the other hand.

Is there a surefire answer out there? Probably not. Are there ideas? You tell me.

The Quebecois Nation?

It's time to weigh in on the recent Conservative motion to recognize the Quebecois as a nation within a nation. Now at first sight it's very clear that this is more of an attempt to grab votes than a motion based on real principles. It is also clear that it was a pre-emptive strike against a Bloc motion to recognize Quebec as a sovereign nation. Strategically, this was a good move for Harper to make, he needs the support in Quebec and perhaps this will achieve him that. And yet it seems clear that a majority of Canadians do not support the motion. In a recent poll 77% of Canadians outside of Quebec were opposed to the motion, a stunning figure indeed.

Personally I do not support the motion. This is not because the Quebecois are not a distinct people's group within Canada but because they are just that. They are a distinct group WITHIN Canada, just as the Cree are, or the Inuit, or even perhaps the large East Indian populations in Vancouver. Canada is a nation, Quebec is not, neither is Alberta or any either province. They are provinces, forming the nation of Canada. Where will this precedent end is anybody's guess. At this point it would be very legitimate for every Native group within Canada to claim the same status, because they are distinct.

This is not some Alberta Conservative stance, the results of the recent poll prove this.

He's Baaaa-aaack!

Tonight Chris Pronger returns to Edmonton. What will happen? If it's anything like Mike Comrie's return (I expect it to be much worse) which I had the privilege of attending, one can expect lots of booing, several Pronger SUCKS chants, not to mention lots of signage and Pronger jerseys with 'sellout' , 'baby' on the back. Hopefully this is all it is, and nothing more dangerous or stupid that fanatics, mixed with lots of beer, can come up with. Did he ditch? Yes. The best would be to see the Oilers win, and keep Pronger off the scoresheet, or maybe see Lupul run him over with an open ice hit, that might be alright too.

Play-ing for God

Last night the Bethany Players, the drama ministry team that I am part of, hit the road for Meadow Lake, SK, now those of you who think you know what barren wilderness is should go here and get re-adjusted. We put on a 45 minute program with 10 pieces of. About halfway through, after realizing how tough of a crowd we were dealing with, I began to wonder what exactly is the point of what we are doing. I get motivated by reactions from the audience and when that is lacking it is hard to keep the energy up, and yet I began to understand that this is a ministry team not a performance team. The point is to minister to people, in essence by worshipping God through drama. Huge reactions from the audience is an added bonus but the foremost point of this ministry team is to worship, this is enjoyable and worthy of my time regardless of how the performance is going or how people are taking it.

This is an encouragement for all other areas of life too, so take heart, take joy in what you do.

A Flawed Trial? No Way.

Here's a gem that BBC has a report on. It seems that an organization called 'Human Rights Watch' has called out against the recently wrapped up trial for Saddam Hussein as 'flawed and unsound'. Now don't get me wrong, I have no doubt that the verdict was determined long before this trial ever began. Let's be honest folks, as soon as Saddam looked up out of that hole, he was headed straight for the gallows; were the legal proceedings perfect, probably not, would the verdict be any different if it had been, NO!

What annoys me more than anything is that these are the same activists who cried out for years when Saddam was persecuting millions of people, gassing thousands of them and yet they raise a stink about the legitimacy of this trial. This is not a discussion on the death penalty as that is a whole other can of worms to open on another day.

It seems to me that SOMETIMES there is activism simply for the sake of activism, this is where nothing is accomplished and where they ruin it for those who really are making a difference protecting the 'rights' of those who cannot defend themselves.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nickboschman.blogspot.com/2006/11/flawed-trial-no-way.html' title='A Flawed Trial? The House is now controlled by the Democrats and the Senate is still up for grabs. This presents a significant shift of power from Bush's Cabinet to the Democrats. A very interesting aspect of U.S. politics is that Bush retains veto power so it will be necessary for the two parties to work together if any work is to be accomplished.

A recent event in the aftermath of the elections, I heard about this just a few minutes ago, is that Donald Rumsfeld, the uber-conservative Defense Secretary is stepping down from his post after months, even years of complaints from every level of government and military. This eliminates one of Bush's primary influences and it will be interesting to see how the government now handles Iraq with Rumsfeld now out of the picture, a man who was one of the greatest pushers for the war in Iraq from day one of the Bush presidency.

Now most of you out there won't give a care to any of these events but when it comes to the most powerful nation on earth these are significant occurrences.

She Was Only Having Breakfast

Here's the update of the adventures of the Boschman hunters.

Weekend One resulted in one fallen animal, a cow moose, now for those of you are a ignorant of animal terms, this is not some hybrid of holstein and moose, but rather a female moose, for those who are knowledgeable enough, I apologize for the explanation.
They are really battling it out and it looks like it may be awhile before a winner is determined.

The first nominee is none other than John Dirom. John is a senior at Bethany College who fills his time with mindless blabber on the blogs of many a person. Now although John has won numerous points with his ode to Nick blog, this does not eliminate him from this prestigious award.

He likes hard rock but will that be enough to scream his way into the winner's circle?

The second nominee is Amber Deschenes.

Now to be fair Amber usually comments in some sort of supportive method, usually to offset the ridicule of the aforementioned Dirom. Nonetheless the category doesn't differentiate between naughty and nice so she's well on her way to gaining ground in this field. She is currently working in Saskatoon and spends her free time telling Liz and April to stop hitting on construction workers.

The real issue is will she be able to construct enough merit to win this award?

Be Sure to Place your Vote!

Stay tuned for the announcement of the winner!

"I'm Not Interested"

As part of my Healthy Church class which ran Monday through Thursday of this week, we were given an assignment. Now the assignment seemed simple enough, go into a mall in Saskatoon and ask this one question to random people. "If you could ask God any question and know that he would answer what would you ask?" Now amazingly this task proved to be quite futile and largely discouraging.

I thought that most people would drop in one of two camps, either answering that they didn't believe in God and thus couldn't answer or that they would provide some sort of question. Perhaps this was quite naive of me to assume but I honestly thought that there would at least be some sort of questioning, whether it be deep and serious or simply surface level. The responses that were most common was either disinterest or no response. This was shocking to me. The world largely does not seem to care or think about God in any capacity. Now although I still find this hard to believe, (perhaps the lack of answers was simply a way to get us crazy young adults out of the way), it was a theme.

Any thoughts? This is quite a flagrant escalation in events, as it proves that the small country has acquired the capabilities to execute such a measure should the need arise. So what does it all really mean?

It means that Kim Jong Il has finally played his ace card and played it wonderfully, in terms of the manouevering of world politics. He, and his leadership, knew very well that the U.S. would eventually come after them, but with the threat of nuclear capabilities this is less likely to happen. The U.S. especially has been put in a situation that it doesn't like, the country must now work with North Korea instead of forcing them into what they want. John Bolton, the U.S. ambassador to the UN said the following, "This is the way North Korea typically negotiates, by threat and intimidation," he said. "It's worked for them before. It's not going to work this time."

Now don't get me wrong, a nuclear North Korea is not a good thing, not for South Korea especially, but for the world in general. And yet I am amazed by how a small rogue nation, burdened by economic sanctions has managed to accomplish the one thing that could give them negotiating power.

Frankly, the world, particularly the U.S., has no choice but to talk with North Korea, even if it isn't on the terms of Georgie. There is always an incredible danger when a nation, perhaps better put, a leadership, has nothing to lose by becoming more emboldened in their actions.

Oh Those Crazy Snakes!

So although Amber has already commented on the movie of choice for Friday night I shall throw in my opinions as well. I must say that it was quite a sweet time, John-0 and I and two sweet older women, I mean really the night was primed for success. Then you throw in a ridiculous movie, with a ridiculous concept, and Samuel L. Jackson, and how could it go wrong? Well it all went wrong when those crazy snakes got all over that plane. I mean really it was just psychotic, snakes everywhere, in the cockpit, in the wiring, in barfbags, in the bathroom (sketchy), you name it they were there. The concept isn't preposterous though, let's be honest. A gang leader in Hawaii is going to be brought down by a key witness flying to L.A., the security is incredibly tight at the place so how else is it possible, you certainly aren't going to try liquid explosives, they would see that coming a mile away, but snakes hidden in a huge crate, nobody is checking for that. Throw in some pharemones to make them go CRAZY, and a plane chock full of hot blooded targets, and you are set up for a wild flight!

Anyway folks, don't go see this movie, it really isn't worth it, unless of course you can convince Amber and Liz to go with you, then I suppose it should be a good time.

Why the British Can't be Trusted

Just read the story here, it's a pretty sweet tale of a very mischevious little boy in England.

It should provide a smile for all of you are not having a good day, or are and just need another one.

Bush Bashing: Venezuelan Style

I must admit that I found the comments by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, to be quite entertaining. Here is a man who is making more enemies each day, except of course those crazy Iranians who have discovered a bizarre brotherhood with the South American dictatorship. In response to Chavez's comments about Bush, two key Democrats came out to defend their Commander in Chief. It seems very ironic to me that politics in the U.S. remain significantly partisan for probably 98% of the time, that is until someone disses the top dog, then it's gloves off. I wonder why the U.S. is so much more willing to defend their government than those of us north of the 49th. It seems that since September 11, 2001, there has been a consistently isolationist policy for the U.S. Whereas this policy worked wonders for the economy of America pre and post WWI, the times are significantly different now. It seems that as the U.S. continues to close itself off to the world, a strategy consistently employed in foreign and domestic policy, the list of opposition to not only the leadership but the country in general will in fact grow.

An interesting sidestory is the recently awarded contract to Boeing to construct 1800 high-tech watchtowers to be placed along the U.S.-Canada border. The U.S.'s closest trading partner is now just another country for the terrorist extremists to enter the country. Here's an incredible idea I thought of: Instead of continuing to increase security, defense and preventative measures, how about becoming friends with more people? As far as I know most friends aren't prone to kill each other.

Everyone Assume Your French Accent!

Yesterday there was a coup d'etat in Thailand in which the military took control of the country in a peaceful and apparently non-violent way. It appears from what I have read that the now deposed PM of Thailand, Thaksin, was quite the corrupt little bugger so this may in fact mean good changes for the country. My concerns of course lie in personal reasons, the Thailand missions trip that is supposed to take place in January. Any instability is unsettling as far as I'm concerned but it seems that things are indeed calm in the country and that this was more of an inevitability than anything else. Hopefully the situation can remain calm in the country and that our trip can go forth as planned!

See BBC or CNN for news updates. For those of you who hate hockey, you can stop reading right now...but perhaps even for you this deal will make you wonder. They have signed Rick Dipietro to a 15 YEAR DEAL, worth $4.5 million a season. Apparently this will be the longest deal in NHL history and the second longest in pro sports history, trailing only Magic Johnson who signed a 25 year deal with the Lakers back in 1981, ya that's right he's no longer under contract, free agent frenzy? Anyway what's ridiculous about this is first of all the length of the deal, what can a team guarantee over a 15yr span, and secondly the fact that Dipietro is an unproven performer. He's played a mere 148 NHL games in the league, with a losing record overall. It has also been noted that he is guaranteed his entire salary even if he has a career ending injury, the retirement question is unanswered. Now that's job security. Kudos to Charles Wang, the Chinese businessman running an NHL club. In 2001 they signed Alexei Yashin to a 10 yr deal worth $8.75 million a year. There's bright hope for the Islanders....' opponents.

The Power of the Y

I shall now delve into the oh so dangerous category of separating men from women. A new study has been released by a University of Western Ontario Psychologist, finding that men are more intelligent than women. Now the first reaction for most living in the current state of affairs is a cautious one. We live in a day and age when it is 'inappropriate' and 'sexist' to place men and women on any type of unequal footing. The study is of SAT scores for 17 and 18 year olds, from a variety of economics and ethnic classes. Phillipe Rushton found that "males scored the equivalent of 3.63 IQ points greater than their female counterparts". What does this mean in the big scheme of things, probably nothing, but it does expose the fact that there are differences between men and women, differences that are ok and should not be perceived as offensive. As a Christian I find it fascinating how God has created men and women differently on a whole host of areas, only one of which is intelligence...or at least the way we define it.

Now I could go on about how great men are and how this proves that men are smarter but really what does that serve. I think that a study like this, backed up by studies in Denmark and Northern Ireland, really proves that differences between the sexes and they are something that points to God's creative genious. That's my dealio.

I'm Tired

Yup that sums it up pretty well. It's about a week and a half since returning from Guatemala (that's it?) and it's really starting to hit me. I think this past week I've managed to go on adrenaline and just by the need of staying alert and aware of the changes coming. Well at this point the changes (big ones) have stopped and it's time to settle into another school year. I knew that I would hit a point of tiredness but I did not count on it being so early on in the school year. What does it all mean? One, that I guess this summer was hard work without much time to actually rest. Two, eventually one's body lets them know that it's time to slow down, take some personal time and reflect.

Despite all of the debrief in Ontario, I don't think that I've really reflected/dealt with my experiences this summer. This is something that I need to do, that will likely take away some of the tiredness. I also need to release all of the stresses of decision making to God. There are lots of things to decide: how many courses to go in, what type of extra-curricular activity, mission trip for next semester. So what am I asking/encouraging? Well for those on my team it is to take some time to rest, maybe that's happened already for those with a less crazy schedule for returning to school, but it is something that needs to happen. Granted, that encouragement can be broadened for those coming off busy/hard summers and returning to Bethany or other schools. It's so important not to be burned out, especially so early on, so take that personal time, that quiet time, that resting time, because it's important, for the physical body and also for the spirit.

Take Care All

Summer Come and Gone

Yesterday I arrived home from Ontario, tomorrow I leave for another year at Bethany. In one week I will have gone from a small village in central Guatemala, to a small village in southern Ontario, to a city in central Alberta, to a small town in central Saskatchewan....that's a lot of travel for someone who isn't all that adventurous. But that is something that I have learned this summer, to be more adventurous, to be willing to move out of my comfort zone and allow God to push me in new ways.

I decided to apply for this program in January with thoughts of an interesting summer but not really a solid idea that I would in fact be accepted and take part. These past four months have been a test for me, a test to see if I could put God ahead of my family, ahead of my comfort zone, ahead of economics, and all those other things. When I learned that I was accepted, and during the past four months, I have felt a peace about where I was, not necessarily a solid plan/knowledge of what I was doing, going to do, but a peace that things would be alright because God wanted me there...which brings us to the 'why'. God knows that, I'm content with that simplified but correct answer.

To be honest I'm not ready for Bethany yet, not ready to get back into the swing of classes, papers, and all that goes along with it. I'm happy to go back, I'm happy to see people I haven't seen in four months, but I haven't transitioned yet, my guess is that will all hit me sometime later on, once the craziness of the start of the year dies down. So what does all this philosophical mumbo jumbo lead me to? It leads me to the fact that my family and friends will not grasp what I experienced this summer, because they were my experiences and not theirs. Hopefully pictures and stories will move people to think differently, to realize more about the world about them for more than the usual shock value of a disturbing photo or tale.

All in all, the summer went insanely fast, it doesn't seem like 4 months since I left Bethany, but it has been, and it's time to return to the storied halls of campus. See ya then.

My Guatemalan Swan Song

Well here it is, the final post from Guatemala...this round at least. I say that because I honestly believe that I will return some day in the future, whether that be with Global Shore next summer or a family vacation or on my own is to be determined. I usually think through things like this quite logically, how could I come back? why would I come back? is coming back again realistic? And to conclude I think that I will. I've had time to reflect a few times in the last couple days, spending time in Antigua and just taking in the city.

One of these times came at the now famous Antigua McDonald's. So as I sat watching the little league world series of baseball, enjoying my McPollo (ya boys, McChicken runs in Guatemala!), and listening to James Blunt serenade my beautifulness, I thought about my time here. It has been a good time overall. One usually says this looking back, when the work is done, and home is in sight and those things are all true, but it has been a good time. It's been good to be thrown into a culture with a different language, different food, and many different ways of doing things and come to the realization that there are different ways of doing things. There are different ways of doing construction, not the most 'efficiency first' ways that would dominate in Canada, but ways that work for the people here.

Bartering is wonderful I must say, and although it's a little tricky to get into at the beginning, determining legitimate prices for certain things, it's still a fun time.

Spanish is a sweet language, and despite all the usual verb form crap that comes with languages, it was fun to learn. I realized at lunch today, as I spoke (minimally albeit) with my mom, that 7 weeks ago the most I would have been able to do is Hola and Gracias.

One thing I've really enjoyed about Guatemala is meeting people from all over the place. It's very weird how when the majority of people are non-white, one who is finds it easier to start up a conversation with someone who is also. I have met people from all over and although the encounters have been brief they've been enjoyable. Today I spoke with two older women who are doing missionary work, one in El Salvador, one in Guatemala. A talk like this wouldn't happen in Canada.

Anyway lots of good stuff this summer, twas definitely where I needed to be this summer and although there were many times of tiredness and soreness and missing homeness and other -ess's, it was a great 4 months (4 months!)

See most of you in the very near future!

Ode to the Kornelsons

So folks, it's 6:30pm down here and Guatemala which would make it 5:30 in Saskatoon, undoubtedly this means that the ceremony of good ol Mitch and Josie's wedding is over and the festivities are beginning to swing into high gear. This is perhaps the first time that I have really truly desired to be some place other than where I am. There have been times when I longed for being at home but never really wanting to be somewhere else.

So to Mitch and Josie, who will likely not read this blog because they'll be busy...on their honeymoon...reading Scripture and such:

Cheers from Guatemala,
John and I will drink to you sometime this week (yes of course it's apple juice!)

How Tizate Has Become the Cheers Bar

So as one reflects on their time in a foreign nation they try to figure out what's different about this country than the one they come from. Well one thing that is very interesting about Tizate is that it seems that everyone in the town somehow learns the 'gringos' names. There are children who as I pass by to work will yell out my name. Now as far as I remember I've never told these children what my name is, but yet they have learned. Perhaps this is because of my tall-white-maness, or they have inside information?

Other such things of Guatemalan note:
1. Saying hello at every opportunity is necessary.
2. Eggs and Beans are essential for one's life source.
3. The Way to Celebrate Birthdays are Heinous Firecrackers at 6am.
4. The Roosters Insist on Reminding All that the Sun is Up (throughout the whole day!)
5. There are zippo good-looking dogs here.
6. The Children are Adorable and Approve of Working a Wheelbarrow.
7. The Bus Drivers are Psychotic...Yet Amazingly Skilled at their Trade.
8. Tortillas are a Staple.

Mostly though they are wonderful people. They take joy in many of the same things that we do in Canada, yet have much less....material things (also of note, is these things are appreciated but not necessary to survival...shocking I know).

More reflections will of course come as I ponder through this experience!

Conspiracy Theory and Velociraptors

Hey All, no posts for a long time so only those faithful will be continuously checking...gracios mi amigos. Anywho this past weekend the team went on a road trip...a long road trip...in a crazy van on a curvy road, which brings us to my conspiracy theory, that being that the government of Guatemala is in some sort of psychotic agreement with the road crews who specialize in corners. Now perhaps this is just due to the hilly terrain but as I have been taught, I look deeper, past the problem (thanks Patch Adams). There has to be some sort of conspiracy here folks. For 7 hours of driving there were no stretches of straight road longer than like 50 meters...a little too fishy if you ask me.

We went to Semuc Champey and what a beautiful location it is. Seriously folks if you want to go somewhere for a honeymoon or something this is the place. Other than expensive flights this is a ridiculously cheap place. We stayed at an awesome hostel for really cheap and the food was also very low prices. Semuc Champey is an area of the river where for whatever reason (God...duh!) there are these levelled out portions which have formed pools of water. It is all rock but solid rock so it's not hurtful on one's feetsies. It is surrounded by incredible hills of beautiful greenery and frankly I think the Jurassic Park franchise must have been shot here. When we were walking to the park I was completely convinced that any point a group of velociraptors would emerge from the trees and attack.

In conclusion, other than some road sickness it was an awesome weekend. There are a few on the team who are quite sick so prayer for them (Charissa and Jenna) would be greatly appreciated. Another team of 18 from Winnipeg arrives tonight for two weeks which essentially takes us to the end of our time here as well.

Take Care (watch out for velociraptors)

The Best Dining Experience

So here's the update again. Things are going alright. Alright as in we arrived Monday morning to our trench caved in...again. We had finally finished it on Friday and left for a relaxing weekend away only to return to more digging. Needless to say it has been a struggle to keep motivation up and spirits high but we press on. I think the most difficult thing for me has been realizing that we won't finish the projects we were intended to finish. To me this would seem like a failure...but an attitude adjustment is more realistic. But I digress...

On a happier note picture this. You arrive to a restaurant furnished with tiled floor, tiled pillars, the floor is completely clean. Farther in is a statue of Francis of Assisi. In the centre of the courtyard is a lovely fountain for your visual pleasure. All of the staff run to take your order and make sure that you have your food very prompt. When any garbage strikes the lovely floor a staff member is sure to rush over, grab it, toss it out, proceed to the back to wash their hands, and resume their previous post. Following your meal the dishes are cleaned up a mere 15-20 seconds after departing. Where were John, Greg, and I...McDICK'S. That's right the McDonalds in Antigua has a fountain and the people run for everything...run for your order...run to grab the food...run to deliver your burger which wasn't quite ready. AND As you proceed to your table a lady takes your paper cup and fills it with ketchup for you...now that's service. So when you diss the Rotten Ronny's in Canada just remember the wonderful atmosphere...the fountain...the statue...the incredible service of McDonalds in Antigua, Guatemala.

The Eagles and The Big D

Greg and I with awesomely cute kids/My House

Well the past few days have been mostly enjoyable as work continues on the construction site and we become more accustomed to Tizate. On Saturday the team went to Hotel Antigua (yup if you stretch out that first syllable it's almost like the Eagles' classic). It was a sendoff for Robert and Yvonne who returned to Canada on Sunday after spending the first 10 days with us. They were extremely helpful in the adjustment to a new culture, country, language and all that shaz. What a segway that was. So now to the Big D. Well Colin Enns asked and I'll give the answer...YUP, let's just say that Immodium is one of my new best friends...so uh pray about that? Other than that issue things have been going quite well. It has been tiring on the worksite but we are making slow progress. We will be finishing up the trench for the 8 meter high wall (yup 8 meters) pretty quick here and get on the actual wall.

First,Second,Third Impressions

Well we arrived safely in Guatemala City around 2:30 on Wednesday and made our way to Tizate to meet our families and begin to settle in. It was a very long day of travel and we were all tired when we got here but excited/nervous about our new living arrangements. I must say that my family is wonderful, Ingrid my mama, and Jennifer and Diana my Guatemalan sisters. We had some time to tour the town which was a nice way to see what Tizate was all about...lots of hills which are quite the terror to hike.

Our work site is at the top of a mambo jambo hill so that's a fun 10minute hike to the top twice a day, and that's just to get to the actual work. We are working quite hard and the heat is taking away whatever energy is left. Spanish classes have started and they are relatively enjoyable, a little difficult to get into but they will prove to be helpful...is what I'm telling myself. The people here are all incredibly friendly and welcoming and have made me feel at home.

I think that's it for now! Pictures will be coming soon hopefully.

Prongone! Ima-gone!

So it happened today, the big trade that Lowe finally pulled off and I must say that at the outlook it is disappointing. Now it must be said that we need to wait for awhile before giving a full review of what Lowe pulled off. This reminds many fans of what the Oilers were always forced to do prior to the salary cap: dumping a star for a lot of future. Lupul looks like he will be a solid second line forward while this Smid fellow is highly touted as a solid defencemen. What this should mean is freedom to resign Spacek and look at working out a trade for a first line forward perhaps.

What is most scary is what opposing teams will have to face in the Anaheim defence corps, Pronger and Niedermayer, two of the top d-men in the world. How do they divvy up the ice time now though, they have two clear #1 d-men, two strong leaders and two powerplay anchors.

In other news I shall be leaving...on a jetplane...i'll be back august 24 (sorry i just couldn't complete the lyrics). I'm excited to be heading out on this adventure and definitely nervous as to what will occur in the next 7 weeks of service. It will be very interesting to be living with a family and doing a lot of stuff with the townspeople. Off I Go. Bye Friends...don't worry there is some internet down there so I'll still be able to bug all of you with email and such.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nickboschman.blogspot.com/2006/07/prongone-ima-gone_03.html' title='Prongone! Asparagone!

Only a couple days after the Oilers disappointing loss in Game 7, news broke that Pronger now wants out of Edmonton, or perhaps better said, closer to his family. From what I have heard out of Edmonton, this is a request based on his desire to be with his family, so who can really fault the guy. The good thing for the Oilers is that he is locked up for the next 4 years and is at top value for a possible trade. It is also good that this is a year where top defencemen are available for free agency (Chara, Redden, Jovonovski). From what good ol Bob McKenzie has said the Oilers are looking for a "quality forward, a quality defenceman, and a first round pick" in any deal for Pronger. Me thinks getting a pure goal scorer should be at the top of the list especially if the Oilers can dip into free agency and use some spare cash to get a top 4 d-man.

Those are my thoughts on the matter. Also, only tomorrow morning is left in the asparagus business. I am very happy to be almost done the work as it has been a long process. There have been some sales this week so that has been a positive end to the season for Ken and Robert as well. Guatemala in a week!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nickboschman.blogspot.com/2006/06/prongone-asparagone.html' title='Prongone? Now definitely it was disappointing to watch my Oilers go down in a game where the only managed some real pressure in the third but perhaps that is kudos to Carolina. This has brought me to thinking about Bethany, whether that is the place that I can truly find a passion. I do not wish to float, to simply go through the rhythms of life and watch another year pass without some sort of goal in mind. Of course this brings me to the questioning and the wonderment of discovering that which God desires for me and my life. It also brings me to trying to determine things on my own, realizing that doesn't work, returning to God, expecting a solid and quick answer and many times not receiving it, or perhaps not hearing it.

As I read more of The Knowledge of the Holy, Tozer addresses the human desire to know the future, to be sure of what is coming. He goes on to comment on how God has often worked in the darkness, being the knowledge of even the angels. There is no need to belabour the eventual occurrence of some quotes so here they are, hopefully they encourage you as they have me, this Saturday morning in southern Ontario, on a day off from asparagus packing!

"God has charged Himself with full responsibility for our eternal happiness and stands ready to take over the management of our lives the moment we turn in faith to Him"

"It is as if God were saying, 'What I am is all that need matter to you, for there lie your hope and your peace. I will do what I will do, and it will all come to light at last, but how I do it is My secret. Trust Me, and be not afraid"'

Love is Patient?

"I think that I must be a very impatient person because God is always teaching me patience"

This is what I said to Wally (one of the organizers of Global Shore) on Friday morning as I explained some of the 'annoyances' I've encountered at work. You see in my line, there is one middle aged man, one middle aged woman, three younger guys, and then a whole swack of pre-teen, to early teen girls. So what are these games precisely?

There are four different things that the girls do when they get extremely bored, an occurence which I cannot fault them for in the least. The first is singing which is fine and a nice change to the same music that we hear at the barn. Secondly they begin cheering the old "Ieee" call, much like on that vehicle commercial. Thirdly is the bubble gum popping. This mostly occurs after breaks when they've started a new piece of gum, and it's not the big bubble popping either but the tiny little 'CRACK'. Finally is the meowing...yes the girls morph into calling cats. This one is the real game, where one girl tries to outdo the other one and so on and so forth.

Now for the first few weeks I could hardly deal with these annoyances and then finally this week I thought to myself what I would do in their situation. If I was in my early teens I know that I would not be able to do this job, now granted they don't have a choice whether they do or don't, but they don't complain. They don't stop their work when they are tired and they are usually able to be relatively happy when they are at work. I was realizing that my annoyance is likely more selfishness than anything and then reading A Love Worth Giving, this was hammered home. Max Lucado goes through 1 Corinthians 13 and writes a chapter on each description of love. Love is patient. Yup, there it is, smack right in the face, deserved.

So what is the point of this entry? Basically an encouragement to everyone who may be feeling annoyed at work, at home, with friends, with family; Love is patient. It may not be easy, but that extra patience exercised at work may be the very difference that fellow employees, friends need to see.

Argo-nuts or 'Why I Love Pot-Smoking Perverts' (John's title)

Once again the CFL has come through with a ridiculous front page story. Now when the Canadian Football League decided that it was necessary to have American teams in the league, I thought they couldn't get any more bizarre. But then Toronto signed a pot-loving, suspended, all-star running back for one season. Yes folks it's true, Ricky Williams is coming to Canada. Now its too bad that Ottawa dissolved because then maybe they could have Williams, to go along with the rest of their circus there.

Now if one looks at this strictly from a football standpoint it's a great move. They are getting an all-star NFL running back who with a wider field will undoubtedly be able to rack up a ton of yards. But then again maybe he'll just blow out a knee when some lineman drills him.

I sincerely hope that the CFL does some promotion of this new attraction, do away with those silly 'Don't Do Drugs' ads, and tell kids the truth. Do drugs, get suspended from a league for a season and get rewarded with more than 240G's...but that's only in Canadian currency!

Harry Neale...Invincible?

I have learned a few things from watching hockey these past few games. 1: The Oilers somehow manage to block shots without getting killed. 2: Giguere cries after every playoff series loss. 3: Harry Neale knows that he is invincible.

Every Hockey Night in Canada devotee knows that Bob Cole and Harry Neale will never ever get fired. The only way they will ever be off the air is when they die. What I have enjoyed the past few games is the realization that Harry Neale has come to in relation to this fact. He knows that he can say pretty much whatever he wants and nothing is going to happen. Now he doesn't push it too far and bash a minority or say the French and Europeans wear visors more regularly than North Americans (haha), but he has taken his opportunity to make whatever ridiculous comments he so desires.

Now you are all saying, "Nick prove your point, I'm not sure I believe you". Ok in last night's game he made several comments however I will bring up two.

"The Ducks powerplay is at 8.3%. I had two beers higher than 8.3% after last game."

"Is that a beard, or is Scott Niedermayer eating a muskrat?"

Oh Harry, I can't wait to hear your comments next round.

Our Thoughts of God

I have been reading a book titled The Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer and have found some very thought provoking statements. It is a book, as the title would indicate, about the Christian's awareness of God. The first chapter absolutely hit me like a ton of bricks as Tozer describes the situation in the church in the first half of the 20th century. Yet I think that it rings true now, perhaps even more so.

Tozer writes about how the church has lost their idea of God as high and mighty and powerful, in an attempt to bring God down to a more approachable level. As a church, the high reverence and respect for the Almighty has been diluted as we seek to make God into our friend instead of our Supreme Creator. Although I strongly believe that God desires a personal relationship with us, a relationship greater and more personal than any earthly friendship, the idea of removing God from his high place does strike a chord.

The quote that struck me the most follows:

"The essence of idolatry is the entertainment of thoughts about God that are unworthy of Him."

How easy it is to simply throw out statements about God, perhaps with good intentions but thoughtlessly all the same. I am not trying to condemn anyone, as I have found myself in the same habit of stating things about God, which seem plausible, but perhaps are not entirely accurate. Tozer's quote has challenged me to think more deeply about my vision of God, the challenge is the same for you.

Thwarted Theory

A theory of mine has been that by 20, one should have some sort of life plan set out, or at least an idea of where they are going in life. Well today was my D-Day, the big 2-0, and for those who forgot, the last day of our friendship...just jokes. Anyway, I've realized that in terms of the usual expectations: career, family, place of residence, I don't really have any sort of solid plan. This is something that in years past would have worried me and yet I am in a place right now where for some reason I'm not worried about not knowing because I think that's where God wants me. He wants me where I can't rely on myself but rather on His guidance, a lesson that is hard to learn...and re-learn...and re-learn.

Anyway, as I sit here on my 20th birthday, away from home for the first time on my birthday, I've come to have a certain comfort in the not-knowing. Although I don't enjoy it persay, I've come to appreciate the way in which it forces me to realize that not having everything figured out is ok. I spent this weekend doing things I will likely never do again, on my birthday at least: dumping rotten asparagus into big bins, visiting with my Uncle, Aunt, and cousins who live about 40 mins away from here, watching fireworks on the shores of Lake Erie, and being serenaded by 11 people, 10 of whom I had never met prior to 3 weeks ago. It is an interesting journey that God takes us on, a journey that is getting more exciting as I stop trying to do things my way.

Feeding My Addiction

Last night I finally was able to feed my addiction...I watched a full playoff game. This is something I had not done in two weeks, something I have longed to do for....two weeks. Last night was the night, and although those Ducks were giving me quite a scare throughout that game, especially the third, the boys pulled it out. Unfortunately this meant getting to sleep after 12 and having to get up for a day of asparagus joy at 7:20. Luckily it was only until 2:45 and consisted a lot of dumping asparagus into big bins so that they could be disposed of.

You see the past few days we have been working to fix some problems with returned shipments of asparagus. Today we dumped 40 skids worth (42boxes/skid, 28lbs/box, you get the idea). It's kind of discouraging to see the business not doing very well here, but it is nice to get an earlier end to Saturday, who knows what next week will be like. It all depends on weather, weather which has been rainy and cool for the past two weeks and doesn't appear to be letting up too soon.

Tata All

My Hockey Insider

As I have mentioned to a few people, the internet was down here all last week and we don't have tv, so I've truly been going through hockey withdrawal. In fact my only source for the scores is a guy at work who watches the games. I must say if it were not for Dan I may have gone crazy. For many days I had no idea what the series were at, other than the Oilers which I always managed to get the scoop on. I have always been a hockey fan and loved watching and playing but until this year I haven't really been a true passionate fan. Perhaps the uprising of the Flames last season and continued through this year has fuelled it and no doubt the impressive Oilers run as well. Tomorrow I shall be able to watch which is truly exciting and after that I will have to find a way, I mean really I can't miss this!

Prayer Please

So here's the situation. All of the work done here is run by machines with conveyer belts which carry the asparagus to the graders, bunchers, packers, and such. On one of the machines the asparagus is graded by a computer and then they fall in bunches onto perpendicular belts which bring them to the people to grab. One of the girls on our team was bending over to pick something up and had her hair caught in the perpendicular belts. Now these belts don't constantly move but do some movements every 10-15 seconds.

For most of us all we heard was screaming all of a sudden and then some people rush over. She is doing ok, very badly shaken up but in terms of physical injury she should be ok. I ask that you would all pray for her and for the team as we do not want to become discouraged by this event. Everyone was getting more accustomed to the work and becoming happier and encouraged so this is a turn of events. We do not want this to interfere with what we are building on here and do not want Satan to get any kind of leverage within our emotions.

Pray for Nicole that she would recover from this and not be afraid to come back to work, for the other people in her line who had to see this happen, that they wouldn't be afraid, for our team that we would bond together through this, and finally for the leaders here at work who are shocked and sickened by what happened.

Thanks all. (Things are going well here though, I must let you all know that)

A Fellow Junior

Well today is our day off, and even after only 2 and a half days of real work it is needed. You see the packing plant that we work in is very intense, one wouldn't think that the job would be terribly hard and it terms of actual difficulty I suppose it isn't. However, the monotony of doing the same actions for 12 hours while having to be on one's feet for that whole time sure takes a toll on the body. I am hopeful and confident that our backs will get used to this type of work day after a week or so. I must say that handling asparagus all day for long days is going to take a toll more on my mental state than physical. Sure my back hurts a lot, but that passes away once I relax for awhile and I get deal with that for the most part during the day. In terms of the mental game, I have found it hard to motivate myself for so many hours when I know that the process is never going to end and there is always going to be more boxes of asparagus to pick up, weigh, close the box, pick up, put on pallet, and repeat. The comfort for me is that there is going to be a Guatemala portion out of this work and I needn't do this type of work ever again. It seems to me however that when one looks back on other jobs they seem better, especially after long days. I enjoyed landscaping last summer and now realize that many positives out of it, most especially the variety of work we were able to do. Needless to say there is no variety in this job, not for me, not for anyone...that's something we shall have to get used to.

Go Oilers

Flames a No-Show

So here's my chance to finally get after those Flames fans after 3 years of sitting, waiting, and wishing (thanks Jack Johnson). I must say that I am more relieved than anything, relieved because I don't think I would have been able to handle the ribbing that would have taken place had the Flames beat the Oilers in the 2nd round. Although it would have been incredible to see that series, and rejuvenate quite a lackluster Battle of Alberta, it's fine by me. So to all those Calgary Flames fans, Kipper finally proved what I thought he would, not that he lost the series for the Flames but that he couldn't do it by himself again.

What is incredible is that the 5th through 8th teams are advancing in the West and the 1st through 4th in the East, bizarro...GO OILERS GO

On a side note things are going well here, we start actual work this afternoon, glad to get on that and earn some money, there isn't a lot of time this summer for that, so it shall be good...here's to 7 weeks of that beautiful green stuff!

Asparagus and Oil

So I have indeed arrived in Ontario, it has been a good but long day and a bit, getting to know people and getting settled in. The group seems quite solid and there is a lot of personality so that should be interesting to get to know. We had a big supper together with the families that are involved with those whole operation and it was great to hear their journey into this ministry and how their vision and our acceptance all comes together in this great plan of God's. It is quite incredible to try and imagine how I can be a player in that plan that is so much larger and grand than I can ever fathom. So on that side of things it is all going quite well.

I was also able to watch the 2nd half of the Oilers game and as I could see by the stats it was the right half to see. The last period was incredible as Pisani used his amazing desire to score two while Hemsky finally did something in this series, scoring two as well (let's be honest the 2nd one was what Oilers fans were expecting from Samsonov and Hemsky!)

It is shaping up to be a Battle of Alberta for the 2nd round, one round later than some had anticipated, but few would have. If this happens it may be the test of my relationships with Flames fans who are currently considered friends...we'll see how that shapes up.

Thanks to those who have emailed, spoken with me on msn, very encouraging to have the support from many people, and also talk to some familiar people...those who haven't get on it, do so.

Off I Go

It is 10:30 on Saturday night, I must be up early tomorrow morning to be at the airport by 6am, then leave at 7am for Hamilton. Things are finally starting to sink in that I will be gone from home for another 4 months, this time a solid 4 months with not even the prospect of just coming on home for a visit. The Republican Party, which currently controls both the House and the Senate (thought not likely after the 2006 elections), has been pushing for tougher immigration laws to crack down on the millions of illegal immigrants in the United States, mostly of course from Mexico. I have been able to understand both sides of the issue as Bush and his comrades desire to honour those Americans who are in the country legally, while on the other hand trying to 'protect' the country from the porous borders. Yet a new story today has finally tipped the scales for me.

In response to a British music producer's recent release of a Spanish version of the 'Star Spangled Banner', Bush said, "I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English." Now I must admit that at times I have been annoyed with those who have immigrated into Canada not knowing English, and perhaps this is a pride issue for me. One thing that I must learn is that if it wasn't for immigration, there is a good chance that I, like many Mennonites would not be here in Canada, possibly not even alive. Two of my grandparents immigrated to Canada as very young children, all of my great-grandparents were from Russia, and were forced out of their country. They would have come to Canada and not known English, I know my great-grandparents knew very little English to their dying day.

So is this an issue of language? Is this an issue of an annoyance with Georgie Pordgie? (well maybe) I think what irks me the most is that Canada and the U.S. possess such great opportunities, especially for those in much more dire circumstances than ourselves. Should we be careful of who enters our nations? Probably. Is there a likelihood of those who desire to cause harm to America getting access to that country regardless? Probably.

Likely I get annoyed with immigrants because I haven't taken the time to get to know many, and understand their circumstances, their background, and why they have come to Canada. One of my CS experiences in freshmen here helped this, meeting a family from Afghanistan, they would have loved to stay there with their relatives, but they were forced out by the Taliban...a governmental group, forcing certain groups of the country out, or killing them...hmmm sounds a lot like Russia after the revolution.

The Players

This evening I had the privilege to go and watch the Bethany Players perform at Summerside Community Church, and I must say that I enjoyed it quite a bit. There was a very low turnout which is disappointing for any performer and that sure was a shame because they did a marvelous job. It was great to see some Bethany faces after a deathly long 10 day hiatus and receive the obligatory hugs which one quickly becomes accustomed to while at Bethany.

The evening had me reflecting again on what friendships mean at Bethany and how those friendships are so very different from others that I have experienced. Curtis Braun spoke on this topic tonight as he shared some thoughts and personal experiences with relationships at Bethany. He mentioned how he wishes that he would have spent more time with people and developing relationships, something that he has learned in the 10 days since the Bethany community has disbanded. It was very encouraging to hear from someone else, the things that I have been thinking about these past few weeks, leading up to and following my departure. Of the many things that I have learned at Bethany, one that I think is most important is the value of relationships, of friends; the value of spending time with people and simply being, that is something that needs to be pushed more in our lives, as the focus on so many other trivial things fills our time.

I'll turn the sentimentality portion of this blog to a one of the great philosophers of the twentieth century:
“If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together.. there is something you must always remember. you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. but the most important thing is, even if we're apart.. i'll always be with you.”-Winnie the Pooh (or A.A. Milne if you insist)

The Second Season

Today begins the NHL playoffs, a time of year when the sun is out, the birds are chirping and hockey rivalries hit full force. More than in any other year, I feel a passion for my team and a distaste for others. Perhaps it is the fact that for the first time in a long time the two Alberta teams are in the playoffs.

As an Oilers fan I am somewhat optismistic, hopeful that this team can do some damage, hopeful that Dwayne Roloson can shock everyone and steal a game or two in the first round. I'm hopeful that Ales Hemsky can finally live up to the superstar status which many think he could attain. I'm hopeful that the Oilers D punishes those old goats of Detroit into submission and when Datsyuk gets back, sends him straight back out. Perhaps more than any hope I have for the Oilers, I hope that Calgary self-destructs, I am hopeful that Kiprusoff suddenly remembers that he is supposed to be a third string goaltender not the best in the league. You see it is the threat of a Flames victory in these playoffs which scares me, it scares me because it is legitimate, and that is hard to say as an Oilers fan, it is hard to say because they have the best goalie in the league, in a playoffs which outside of Brodeur has no proven playoff goaltender. When the Flames made their run in 2004 I'll admit I was hoping for the underdog, mostly because I thought they would eventually lose (which they did, no whining about that Gelinas 'goal' now), but now they are legit and I don't want them to have success.

This rivalry is a good thing, it's something my generation has lacked due to the pitiful performances by both the Oilers and the Flames. Now they are both in, I'm looking forward to a third round match-up, that would be sweet!

The End....Nah It's Only the Beginning

For those who were present at the commencement cermonies yesterday, and that's most who read this blog, I must mention how incredible it was to look at my students, teachers, and staff and realize how God has worked so wonderfully this past year at Bethany. As I sat and realized that in only a few hours I would be departing back to the Promised Land of Alberta, there was a definite sense of sadness but also a sense of excitement as many are returning for another year and others yet are going to be out in a whole sort of areas. For me, Rick Schellenberg's talk to the students was particularly moving, as he mentioned how the school has grown close to one another over the past eight months and this is so very true, and to this I wonder why Bethany affects people so greatly.

Foremostly it has to do with God's hand in the school and the lives of the people there. The relationships that I have formed may not result in staying in contact for life but they are relationships which go so much deeper than many of the friendships I had in high school...why? Because Christ is our commonality, if nothing else is in common it does not matter, because Christ is. That, to me, is what causes the greatest amount of emotion. Although it saddens me to say goodbye to those who I will not see for several months, and some never again, it is the excitement of what God is going to next and the reunion in heaven.

Thank you to all who have touched my life this past year, thank you for sharing a love for Christ, that bond, that commonality will never be forgotten or lost.

The 'Gospel' of Judas?

In a new National Geographic Special, a document known as the Gospel of Judas is explored (the document investigated is a copy of a lost original). The process of researchers to authenticate, translate, and reassemble is shown and there are many shocking discoveries that are made. According to the study the Gospel of Judas reveals a very different story than is traditionally accepted amongst Christians about Judas Iscariot. It seems, according to this document, that Judas was instructed by Jesus to betray him, as a way to achieve his mission. The document was found in 1970 and only in recent years as analysis of it taken full flight, as its importance of a radically different point of view was realized.

So what would it mean if Judas had betrayed Jesus because of direct instruction to do so? What would it mean to the traditional thought that he was a spineless traitor who handed over his leader for some coin? I think that it would mean that instead of Judas being one of the purest examples of treachery and betrayal, he would be seen as a devoted obeyer of Christ. This document does not mention the crucifixion or the resurrection but instead focusses on a 'secret' meeting between Jesus and Iscariot. What I do cannot understand is why Judas would commit suicide if he had been following orders, it is possible that he would have been killed because of a perceived betrayal but it doesn't seem logical that he would kill himself if he had in fact been following the direction of Christ. It will be very interesting to see what happens in light of this new study, documentary, issue, and books.

The Waterpark

This past weekend was one of extreme fun and adventure as 11 of us college boys drove to Edmonton to spend a day at the waterpark. For me these last few weeks are a time of realizing how people enter our lives and leave them and trying to figure out the ways in which God uses these people to make us better. There are many who I will undoubtedly never see again and likely never communicate with again, except for some random encounter or batch email. For many of those it is easy because I haven't formed any kind of relationship, for others whom I have had some sort of relationship but not a huge one it will likely be surreal but unaffecting and then there are those who I will probably reminisce about at random times and think about those good times. Thankfully the good times will continue with other people, what's great about these bible school relationships is the bond that is formed far past the trivial but goes into our relationships in Christ, and that is sweet, so when the tears come on April 15th, enjoy them, it shows that we love each other.

Guatemala

Just under a week ago I found out that I was accepted for a Global Shore program which entails 2 months in Ontario working on an asparagus farm and then 2 months doing some missions stuff in Guatemala. I was very surprised to hear about the acceptance and am quite nervous but also very excited about the opportunity. It should prove to be a much more interesting summer than I had thought and it does mean missing lots of things at home that I would have liked to be a part of. At the same time I really feel that this is where I should be this summer, even though it will be difficult and much more crazy than previously planned. It seems that I have to be taught time and time again to stop doing so much planning. I very much enjoy planning and I think it is a good quality to have, but not in everything, not in the things that I really need to give over to God. So that's the plan for my summer...uh oh...

MC Hammer?

So for all of you doubters, I truly believe that this is the real thing. It seems too real for some nerd to have made up, and 2. What else does MC Hammer really have to do with himself than write a blog. Essentially Lowe did what he had to do, pick up a proven NHL goaltender and improve the offensive side of the game. He did both, Roloson fits the bill of what they need without giving up too much. They probably did overspend on Roloson but it was necessary in a tight market. The price for Samsonov was fine as far as I'm concerned, Reasoner was a plug but wasn't fitting the bill of a defensive forward. The Oilers now have a purely offensive threat, I would think that MacT will let Samsonov do what he wants, play the dinky European dipsy-doodle style, the PP also improves a lot having a designated trigger man. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out for the stretch drive, Vancouver is improved, Calgary is indifferent, Colorado is probably worse off in the short term, and Minnesota who cares.

Go Oilers

To the Fence-Sitters

At this time of the school year, when people start realizing that the end of this year is coming quick, one question is most feared "Are you coming back to Bethany?". Undoubtedly everyone is asked this at some point in the final couple months of school. For many it is quite a simple yes or no, sometimes without an alternative plan in mind but the knowledge that they will not be back. Some of these assured no-ers will be back, as they realize over the four months of summer that this is where they want/should be back. Some are a definite yes, and then there are the fence-sitters, those that aren't sure that they want to be back or that they should be back. This is the position I am in and it is not an easy one as the comforts of this school weigh in against the feelings of moving on to something else. What that something else is I'm not exactly sure...but it's the opposing option to coming back. There are many things that I could want to do, but the question of should continues to come back to me. How I answer this should question is difficult as I pray and hope that God will answer it for me but at the same I know that this may not occur. So an encouragement to those fence sitters the one thing I can be sure of is that I need to trust Him.

The Loss

What can a fan of Canadian hockey say after being eliminated two rounds prematurely? I suppose it is with honesty that this team simply wasn't up to par with other teams, in my opinion mostly in desire. The game against Russia showed that the team can compete with the best in the tournament yet once that first goal went in, it showed once again that this was not a unified team. Whether that can be blamed on a lack of leadership, or simply discontinuity, we probably won't know. It may have been the distractions of Gretzky and Bertuzzi which affected this team. Whatever it was Canadian Olympic hockey is over for another 4 years. Thankfully there are many other capable Olympians who have been showing incredible performances. Perhaps the most shocking thing is the fact that Gretzky has failed at something for Canadian hockey...so sad....so very very sad....if the pressure was to much in Torino, wait until Vancouver guys.

A Proud Canadian Hockey Fan

So now it is time for my thoughts on the Canadian Olympic team, now that the largely unimportant qualifying round is over. For those that have already hit the panic button and are ready to abandon Gretzky and his team, CALM DOWN. Until Canada loses in the medal round, none of the past 5 games are going to matter. Guess what folks, Finland went 5-0 but with one loss they are done. No Flames fans were in uproar over the 7th place finish in the 2003-2004 season when they went on their run...why?...because it didn't matter once they were winning in the playoffs. There will always be disagreement about the selections, but frankly if Canada wins gold, all the doubters will add some red to their white flag. I'm not saying I have doubts, but let's give a little credit to the best hockey nation in the world, chosen by the best player to play the game (sorry Orr/Howe/Lemieux/Ruutu fans). GO CANADA GO.

Golden Jenn

Just a little Spruce Grove pride here. It must also be said that it was quite rewarding as it went off, essentially without a hitch; the speaker showed, the band showed, no YAers were lost, and nobody was killed at lounge matches. What is interesting to me is the lull and fall that comes after this type of weekend. The adrenaline pumps throughout the weekend and the lack of sleep is fine, as teens from across the country come to a college devoted to the focus of God. The energy and excitement all falls away as we all return to the routine of classes, homework, and dorm life. So what does a weekend like this actually accomplish, especially for those who host it? For myself, being on YAC and in the production, it provides satisfaction that we did a good job preparing and implementing the plans for the weekend. But in terms of long-term growth, that which should be created, I don't feel has been accomplished, for myself anyway. Chad, the speaker, spoke to this fact when he said that those things that we promise or pledge to do during a weekend like this are rendered useless if we don't implement them in the first 3 days after a weekend. So here it is, Day 3 after the weekend, what has changed? What has been accomplished?

Footwashing

For those of you at Bethany, the idea of footwashing will be very fresh in your minds, and possible fresh on your hands. Today we had an opportunity to wash another person's feet and have the same done for ourselves. During leadership week I and the rest of the student leadership had an opportunity to take part in a similar footwashing exercise. Needless to say, it is one of the most humbling experiences one can have. Not only is one washing another person's feet, I think even more humbling is allowing oneself to have their feet washed. This may be due to embarrassment or awkwardness but I think it also comes out of pride, a pride that someone shouldn't be doing such a thing as washing our feet. Tie that thought to the knowledge that Jesus washed his disciples' feet and I feel truly humbled. It seems to me that his disciples were undoubtedly feeling awkward when their Messiah, their teacher, lowered himself to the role of a servant. This servant's heart is something that we need to be reminded of, as we strive to become more like Christ.

The Essay

Ok Ok,
Thanks to all who so graciously encouraged me to get writing that paper of mine. I've cranked out about 70% of it, and will finish this afternoon, but I won't be promising anything on that. You see for Anabaptist Distinctives class I am discussing 'that oath'; it has turned out to be much more interesting that I had thought, it seems when people are willing to be imprisoned, whipped, killed for refusing to take oaths, there is more reason to pay attention to their reasons. It's also interesting to note that not all the Anabaptists were boring and bland back in the day. A Georg Blaurock refused to take an oath when being exiled, returned and could not be imprisoned because he didn't take the oath not to return, knowing, when he left, that he would in fact be back...sneaky little Anabaptist that one was.

That's all.

The First Post

Well folks, I figured that I would join the societal revolution and create a blog.
